How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
For our project we decided to create an 'Indie Pop' music video, a digi-pak and a poster advert. The only links we have between our products in the red balloon, the female and the use of the beach imagery which we depict in the music video. We really wanted to highlight these links throughout all three of our products so our target audience could recognise the symbol of the red balloon with the artist. When comparing our products they do have a lot in common each product focuses on the female with the red balloon, shown in the music video the front cover of the digi pak and the main image on the advert poster. Through this convenction the colour follows throughout the entrire products creating an easily rememorible link between the balloon and the artist for our targer audience. Some viewers may even pick up on the focus of the scenery of the beach throughout the products we did this deliberatly but knew it would not be a main link that an audience would focus on. However we still followed the beach theme and each product includes the theme. The dig-pak and advert only include the scenery of the beach which was the main focus on the production of the music video. But the music video has two sets of scenery in. We focused the main attention to the scenery on the beach so we could create a combination between all of the products. We didn't want to divert away from our initial ideas of how we were going to use the nature so we re used the front cover of the digi-pak for the advert. Straight away the audience would associate the powerful image on the front cover with the poster advert thus taking in the information given on it.
As you can see below even though there is a clear link as the images are the same for both the front cover of the digi-pak and the advert poster. We had to change the colour of the advert as it was too dazzling for the text. But we decided to keep the colour of the balloon the same we used photoshop to keep the colour of the balloon the same as the music video and album cover. We did this as the main focus throughout all three products is the balloon so if we changed the colour of it to fit with the change of colour to the advert then we faced a problem that audiences may not associate the balloons with the artist. We wanted to clear clear associations throughout all of our products expecially with our digi-pak and advert.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
After looking through our audience feedback we are delighted that we have created and produced effective job at representing our 'indie pop' genre. When we have showed our music video and print products many of the target audience have stated that the genre of the artist is clear. The switch beween the depressed black and white footage to the more joyful/happier shots in colour highlights the female looking back on memories which fits in well with the isolated imagery which is what we intended. However what we have learned from some of our feedbacl is that the red balloon element and it's meaning could be unclear at the beginning till the end of the muisc video when the female lets go of the balloon. It was suggested that the male character in the coloured shots could have been wearing red which would then the balloon would clearly symbolise the male and the love for each other. If we were able to create the music video again this is something that we would definatly take on board and put into the music video to create a clearer narrative for those in our trager audience who struggled to understand the narrative of the music video at first. They all liked the quality of the shots many have said that they were nicely composed expecially the black and white shots which seemed to stand out as being the favourite from our feedback. They partically noticed the transitions and spacing between the black and white shots and the coloured flashbacks which were described as being done well. We really wanted the transitions to flow smoothly which was highlighted in our feedback noting that none of them were too disjointing or ineven with one more than the other. Others did criticise the flashbacks as there was a few differences in the brightness and the level of light but continuted to say thar it was hardly noticabale. From our feedback we were applauded for our digi-pak stating that is was their favourite part of the project as it looked professional and up to a hight standard considering they were taken on a mobile phone and a 'very outdated camera.' Many did say the advert was the least favourite which as a group we completly agree with. The advert is definatly not up to the high standard quality which we produced for the digi-pak due to the colouring of the image which we tried to follow for the 'Noah And The Whale' advert. If we didn't follow the concept from the advert we found in our research we would have been able to create our own unique twist to it just like we did for our dig-pak.
I thought it would be extremly useful to interview a few individuals who were not in our target audience to give us feeback on our music video and print products. Below is the video for the interview.
I asked the two individuals in the interview which out of the three products was their favourite and most professional they both agreed on the digi-pak which was also highlighted throughout the rest of our audience feedback. As a group we also agree that the digi-pak we created was the most professional and when looking back at our products we would most defiantly take the feedback we recieved on board.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
For this project we have used a variety of different programmes and techniques to enspire, develop and create our product ideas. During are stages of our research we have used our 'blogs' intensively to express our ideas and creativity. The blog has helped us engage with members of our groups over the weekend as we are updated on their latest developed ideas allowing other members of the group to develop them further. The main aparatus we have used continiously is the 'video camera'. The video camera lets us express and practice our initial ideas for our media product leading to the final production where we were able to film our footage without hesitation and knew exactly what shots and angles would fit our genre of music best. Whilst filming the footage we thought it would be an effective idea to take some shots of our location on the day of filming so we could blog about our day and express to our audience what was going to be expected from our music video. Looking back on the images we realised the images were actually a high quality and were exactly what we were looking at for our album. Leading on to us using 'Instagram' an online social network, photo sharing service that allows individuals to take their own images, apply digital filters and share them. This allowed us to create the images for our album covers and the whole of the digi pak. We have also used 'Photoshop' on the front cover image. Once the effect from Instagram was placed upon the picture the balloons became a dull red and very cartoon like which was not how the balloon was seen throughout the music video. We decided to play around with photoshop to see if we could brighten the balloon without causing any problem to the effect already placed on the image. I was not familiar with 'photoshop' so the members of my group taught me how to create the new effect on the front cover image incase we had to brighten up the balloon again. I am now able to use photoshop without any guidence.
Below is a short video of how we created the image for the album cover using Instagram.
Below is a short video of how we created the image for the album cover using Instagram.
Below are screen grabs for how we created the brightness of the red balloon in Photoshop.
We used the magic wand in photoshop this was done by pressing down on the button 'alt'.
We then clicked refine edge
We then made the balloon look less harsh by using the feathering tool in photoshop. We had to make sure the balloons were equally even. After using this tool we were then able to change the colour of the balloons to a much more similar brighter red to the balloons in the music video. The balloons looked more natural and now didn't look as if they had been placed on top of the image.
However we then went on to image- adjustments- hue and saturation to change the colour again to get the pink tinge off the balloons.
Then we changed the lighting, saturation and hue of the balloons to make sure we produced the best red balloons we possibly could.
The image above is the final outcome which we used for the front cover and the advert.
Due to the wind of the day of filming when we came to the editing process we tried many different ways to keep the balloon red whilst the background was black and white. We first tried 'Matte Effect' in our practice task which we realised straight away was not suitable for our final outcome. So we decided once the editing process began to use 'Leave colour' effect but again we encountered implications the red balloon was thankfully staying red but other parts of the footage such as scenery that had a slight tinge to the colour was also changing due to the effect. So after deliberating we decided the best idea was to commision someone who knew more professional ways to create the effect we needed for our music video. The effect was then created frame by frame a very time consuming and complicated way to create the effect. However the outcome was outstanding and created the exact effect we wanted with the red balloons.
I decided to film James explaing how he created the red balloon with the black and white shots.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The Vaccines 'No Hope'
Elliot Guy 'Lover's Eyes'
When conducting our research we came across a music video called 'Waiting For My Chance To Come' by Noah And The Whale. This video was the first in our chosen genre that we found had a switch between black and white to colour. When analysing the video we thought the switches between colour were really effective we could clearly see a change in setting when the colour of the music video changed. On watching the music video we decided that this was something we wanted to incorprate into our own work. After discussing and putting all our ideas together from the research we decided on using the beach scenes in black and white to create a melancholy and isolated atmoshphere but when we switch to colour to have the different shots fast paced and joyful to fit in with the brightness of the shots compared to the black and white ones. We believed that the colour differences was something that would clearly show our target audience the difference we were portraying in each setting. This effect worked really well we were able to create a significant difference between our two settings and stories just like the 'Noah And The Whale' music video.
ELLIOT GUY
'Elliot Guy'- The Root Of Memories
However even though we followed many typical convenctions of a 'indie pop' artist we also challanged and developed some of them too. We found that normally in our chosen genres music videos and achillery texts they focus the products around the same sex as the artist or group. We wanted to challange this and create something that could be unique to the genre but not divert completely away from codes and conventions of our genre. We decided to have our artist as a male 'Elliot Guy' and base the artists achillery texts and music video around a female. We not only did this to challange the ideas of an 'indie pop' artist but also so we could reach out to the female gender in our target audience so they felt apart of the artist. We based the album cover, advert and music video all around a female with the red balloon. Creating a iconic image and reaching out to all our targer audiences. We really thought this was a successful idea and really captured what we wanted to portry.
When researching our genre we came across that in the adverts used for the artists the album cover is normlly used. We first decided that we would stray away from this idea but after trying numerous times to find an image that would be sutibale for the advert we decided to follow the original concept we found in our research. We got alot of our ideas and influences for the advert from 'Noah And The Whales' advert for the album 'First Day Of Spring. We recognised the same picture used from the ablum in the advert creating a direct link with the both products which is a clever and effective concept to follow. We also noticed the advert used pastle tones and colours alot of the image taken up with the sky. Luckily the image used on the 'Elliot Guy' album cover had a element of the sky in it too. We toned down the colour of the image so we could create the samel pastle effect as the 'Noah And The Whale' album which made the text on the advert stand out and effectively draw audiences attention to the stars and comments given to the artist. We kept the original colour of the red balloons in the advert so the brightness of them would draw audiences attention in to focus on the balloons and associate them with the muisc video.

Evaluation Plan
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
This will be my only written question. I will use screen grabs from the music video I created and shots from other music videos we based our research on. I will do this to present where some of the concepts for the music video came from.
Link 'The Vaccines'- No hope. Shots of flowers/nature.
Typography- Link to our research. We followed the typical type of typography for our artist. The name of the artist being the logo.
Switch between black and white to colour- Idea linked with indie group 'Noah and The Whale' in research.
Challanged typical forms and conventions- 'Red Balloon'.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
For this question I will play the music video and show an audience the print products. I will then record individuals talking about aspects they think we could have improved on and certain things they like. I will then do an overall paragraph on the comments form the audience.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
I will record myself speaking about the use of the different medias, I will also put together a short video of the development of our ideas through the use of the different media's.
- Photoshop: To edit digipak/pictures
- Instagram: To take the pictures
- Blogs: To note down new ideas, research and communication
- Adobe: To make the film/balloon colour. 'Matte' 'Leaver Colour' 'Fram by Frame'
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Music video links to the pictures used in the digi pak, all set in the same setting and the concept of nature is present throghout them all.

Final Back Cover
This is our final back cover and spine of the album for 'The Root Of Memories'. The image used links to the music video setting and the continious theme we have presented throughout our whole projet. The image of the beach is well presented and the positioning of the text on the back cover really highlights the quality and stricking image we have used. The image is very bold but the edit of 'earlybird' which we used through Instagram emphasises the lonely and isolated feel for the whole album. The same typography has been used throughout all our print products creating a link between them and the artists name logo. We tried different colours for the spine but decided that white would be the best choice as it makes the image stand out and does not draw away from the back/front cover. Due to our back cover image being so drawing for the audience we didn't want to over power this so we kept the back cover classy and simple. We did this by using small text at the bottom which blends in with the colour contrast but is still noticable. Whilst the titles of each song stands out against the lightness of the sky in the image even though the song titles to stand out we positioned them very precisely so it did not over crowd the image and draw away from its effectiveness. The use of the bold tool on the song titles was used so longer song titles were easy to read and did not blend completley in with the image this is really effective as the audience we straight away look at the back cover and then their eyes will be drawn to the song titles hopefully them creating them to purchase the album.

Digi Pak
In the group we struggled to think of writing that could be used in our digi-pak such as thank you's and copyrights. We have a vast amount of images to use throughout the digi-pak but lacked ideas for the writing. Even though we knew what writing we wanted in our digi-pak from our research into such artists as 'Lana Del Rey' we found it really hard to create the ideas. It is very important to make our album look very realistic so we thought of finding an album cover and looking at the creditis we decided to have a look at 'Coldplays' seen in the image above. This writing at the bottom of the back cover of the album is used in every album so we thought we would have a quick go at creating this.
The image above is just an idea of a page in the digi-pak. Having this type of imformation is very effective in creating a realistic album digi-pak as we are including credits and courtsey to individuals that have helped in the production of individual songs. This idea could be used throughout the digi-pak, we could have an individual page for each song on the album cover and have the name of the song at the top of the picture and the credits at the bottom. Each song would have there own picture for the song.
ANY FEEDBACK ON THIS IDEA WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL.

Completed Front Cover
The two images above are the final front cover for the album. As you can see we have changed the colour of the balloon from the image we originally took as it was a shade of pink. We tried to find the same colour as the balloons used in the music video so it looked realisitc. As a group we also decided on keeping the front cover simple so we thought that having a see through sticker on the album cover would be the best option. When adding the finishing touches to the album cover we had a look at some orignal album covers and came across that the sticker usually promoted the current single for the album. So we decided to use the stickers full advantage and promote the music vidoe we have created.

Deadline
I missed todays lesson due to the current weather conditions and will unfortunalty have to miss tomorrows lesson as well. However I will be keeping up to date with ideas the rest of my group are developing and letting them know any ideas I have. Our deadline for this project is coming closer and as a group we really need to pick a final advert idea and start producing it along with our album cover. We need to really start to produce all our ideas so we can have plently of time to adapt them incase we come along implications on the way.
Advert Idea
As you can see from one of my previous blog posts we really like the idea of having four seperate images. We found this in our research into adverts for band albums already. But we also found a image when we shot the footage which we are using in our digipak the first image above really helped us develop our ideas further. The images above are ones that have been taken on our location scout we took lots of images just incase they came in useful which they have. The four chosen images which link to the music video we have created and also fit well with each other. They follow the nature theme that we have been following throught this project which helps us as a group follow the norms for the indie pop genre of music. We really like the ideas of the postcard and the oval image in the middle of it. It's very effective and the composition of the images really works well, we will adapt this idea to make it unique and are own.
Above is a picture of the ideas above combibed together. I think this would be a successful advert for an album cover it's original and does not divert away from what we have been trying to portray throghout our music video. It would need some more work to do it which we will be developing in our upcoming lessons. The images used are landscape to make the advert seem more cosy and not empty which would add a cold feel to the advert. The surrounding image are black and white as we needed the central image to stand out on them as that's the main image which creates a link between the album and the music video. The idea of having black and white images and then a colour image really works well as it again fits in with the black and white and colour effect we have used throughout our video. This idea for the advert is very iconic and eye catching however when making the final product we will need to ensure that the colour image is leathered or blended so it doesn't seem like we have just added a photo on the top. It needs to look like the image is supposed to be there which will make the advert look more realistic. We also need to ensure that the typography is the same for the artist name and band name as this is what will be our logo for the artist.

Advert Idea
Mumford And Sons Advert
t we wanted to try out for an idea for our advert. The use of having each band member in the advert makes it personal and fans will be able to recognise the band members to the advert. The composition of the individual boxes is really effective and unusual however we knew we wouldn't be able to create this idea the way this advert has as we have an individual artist. So we came together with an idea that we would use the image from our album cover and cut the image into four parts. I really like the idea of having the four parts of the image as it can link to the numerous amount of memories one individual can have throughout their lives which fits in with the album name we created (The Root Of Memories). The colours in the backgrounds of the image are outside fitting in with the theme of nature we found throughout our research into our genre. By having images of nature creates a peacefull and rexlaxing tone to the advert. We would also be including the theme of nature in our advert as our image is used on the beach which will also create this tone. The back colour of the advert being black makes the images and text stand out very dramatically even though this grabs an audiences attention by having black. However I don't think we should use a black back colour as it won't fit the soothing and warm feel we get from the image.
Final Idea Album Cover
This is our
final idea for our album cover. As you can see from the image it's very simple
but eye catching drawing the audience in towards the album itself. By using
capital letter's for all of the words makes them stand out. By doing this we
thought it would look better instead of using the bold as it's not drawing away
from the main image. The use of the dashes in the album cover near the text
will catch the audience’s eye straight away which is a great factor as they
will straight away be looking at the artists name. This is the beginning of the
'Zed Effect' the audiences eyes draw a 'Z' shape when looking at the album
cover which is something we took into consideration with the positioning of our
text. The use of the colours in the image are very warming and not too vibrant
(we wanted to leave the balloon in the image to be the vibrant symbol). The
positioning of the image on the album cover is really effective the audience
can get the full impact of the image and will be able to associate the balloon
and the female character with the music video 'Lovers Eye' on the album. The
balloon is representing the main symbol for the album cover which is something
we hinted at in our planning. We wanted the balloon to be the logo for the
artist which can be found in my previous blog posts. However when developing
our ideas we found that the typography of our text would be a more realistic
logo. We decided that the balloon would become the 'logo' for the album
cover/adverts and such products linked to the album. Instead of having just the
one balloon like we did in the music video we have used two so we can represent
that not only will the album have songs focused on reminiscing but songs will a
positive atmosphere. The balloons can also be linked to the start of the couple
in the vidoes love for each other, the female is looking out into the horizon
of the sea this represents that she is reflecting on her past memories
peacefully this can be linked to the name of the album 'The Root Of Memories.' We got most of ideas for our album cover from our research. When analysing album covers for my research I found that there was an image of the artists on the front cover. We wanted to take this concept on board but add our own twists to it so we could make it unique and our own. We decided that we would follow the idea we found of using a person for the front cover but instead of using the artist we thought we would be able to create a better link with the female in the video with the album cover as she is the one who is associated with the red balloons. Even though the artist we have created is a male using a female for the album cover let us be able to have alot more diversity in our ideas and being able to direct the album to both sexes.
This image is very pixleated so we will have to make the image again.

Lesson
Today in our lesson we are concentrating on producing the advert for our album. We are drawing up all of our ideas and will post them on the blog at a later date. One of our first concepts was to have the red balloon in the background of the poster taking up most of the room this was to draw the audiences attention to the advert straight away. Which would create a link between the music video we have created. By having the balloon in the advert will allow the auidence to associate Elliot Guy and the new products he has been producing. Over a section of the balloon there is the four blocks that look like they will be individual images. But our idea is to use the image from the album cover and chop the image into sections for each block. This concept is something we discovered from a advert for Mumford And Sons which I am in the middle of analysing. We partically liked the idea as it was different and we thought it would be iconic and eye cathing for the audience. We want a advert that is simple we don't want to bombard the advert with too many images as it will become distracting and the advert will become to busy. We will be creating many more ideas and beggining to create them on photoshop.

Comparing with AS
In this task I have conducted a lot more research into the project than I did in AS. My AS level blog research was in detail but I could have completed alot more research that would have helped us in creating a more realstic romantic comedy opening scene. In this task I have gone into a lot of depth into my analysis of music videos based around our chosen genre of music. I have also been very up to date with my planning always blogging about changes in our footage and explaining difficulties we have had to overcome whilst filming. However even though I did do this for our AS level project I did not continuiously keep it up throughout the whole project. For our last project we filmed the footage in one of our group members houses. Choosing this location was something that did not really need lots of planning we did not have to consider many of the implications of filming as it was an easy and simple setting. Whilst choosing our location at South Shields beach for our most recent project it consisted of us doing vast amounts of planning for the trips to the beach. We had to consider the implications of weather and keep track of it leading up to the days of filming. We had to do location scouts of different areas of the location that would fit and look best for our filming. Choosing this location was very ambitious compared to our AS Level we had to plan our trips to the beah in vast amounts of detail. Thinking of ways that we could overcome certain implications we could have faced from using this location. During this project I have recognised how having detailed research and planning everything to the last detail is very effective and extremly useful for filming.
