Balloon

Whilst filming at the beach we did encounter some wind which has effected out shots. We were hoping to use 'Matte' to keep the colour of the red balloon, but due to the wind this is not possible. We knew that if it was windy we would have to change the effect that we were planning on using, as we faced the problem with the wind when we tried 'Matte' on a poppy in one of our planning tasks. During this week we have been playing around with our footage, we have been thinking about how we were going to create the shots in black and white but keep the red colour of the balloon. We had some difficulty at first with keeping the colour of the balloon in the shots and we thought that we were going to have to abandon our unique idea. When playing around we came across the effect called 'Leave Colour', after playing around with the effect for a while we found a way that we would be able to keep our shots in black and white and be able to keep the colour of the balloon. When using this effect on certain clips, there is a shine of red missing from the balloon, as when we have used the effect it has picked up on the sun shining on the balloon and will not notice that it is red. This isn't very noticable and we will be able to work around the problem, however when creating this effect for other balloon shots if we face the problem again, we will have to change the effect we are using so we can create the image perfectly.

Below is an image of how we have been using the 'Leave Colour' effect.

  1. I'm hoping that James might be able to offer an alternative approach which might be a little more effective. This is a useful blog entry - you should aim to continue with this level of detail.

  2. I an currently trying to see if I can work around this problem for you but as Mr Earl likely mentioned, should really have researched the shot and effect more before actually going ahead with filming. As if did a test and see the best way to tackle the problem/effect would have then gave valuable insight into the effect and best way to film it. The "Leave Colour" effect can work like its supposed to if shot is static and the colour being removed is the only one in the shot (like red roses against a white wall) but if it was leaving the blue colour of a pair jeans in a room with blue carpet, that's where it loses its effectiveness. I will be trying to have a look and will likely be in Wednesday to show what I can do.
