Rough Copy

This is the rough copy of our music video for the song 'Lovers Eyes', we have pratically finished all the editing we just need to focus the last few days of the deadline on the ending of the music video and adding any finishing touches, we are also going to possibly slow down a few of the shots on the beach so our narritive for the music video becomes clearer, at the moment some of the shots are short with a quick pase, if we slow the pace down (not adding a longer time frame) the narrative for the music video will be clearer to our audience, as at the moment they don't all fit the melancholy atmosphere we want them to have.

Our idea of having the black and white clips, contrasted with the ones in colour works really well you can see the change in atmosphere and time straight away, we have added an edit to footage in colour to make it have more of a home video, relaxed feel to it. The effect has given the footage a more of a hazed colour to the clips, something we referenced to in our research. So far I am very pleased with the music video, and I am looking forward to seeing the final product.

Extra Research

I decided in my free time that I would again have a look at album covers linking to the 'Indie Pop' genre. I thought that I would choose an artist that I have already focused some research on their music videos and album art to see if our newly created ideas are fitting in with the typical codes and convenctions.

Lana Del Rey has created a new album cover of her 'The Paraside Edition' to her album Born To Die. Even though the album art is different to the origian album cover, the placement of the typeography and the artist herself are all positioned in the exactly the same way. Cleaverly creating a link to the previous album for the audience, the new image still uses the typical nature theme, which we have also included in our ideas for the album cover (the beach), even though the image is in the background and Lana herself is the main image it still creates an effective back setting, following the convenctions of the Indie Pop genre. Even though the text on the album cover is extremly large and eye catching becoming a main focus of the album cover, we have decided not to follow this. Due to the composition of our image for our album cover it would work best to fit the album and artist name in the sky letting the full image take main focus for the audience. As we are trying to create an iconic look for the artist with the balloon, we will be able to create a link with the balloon to the artist, even without the name taking centre stage.

I feel that so far are ideas are along the right track, we are following the Indie Pop genre and not deviating away from it. Even though we are creating our own unique individual style it will still be recgonisable to the genre. We will continue are reasearch on digipaks, which we develop our ideas further. As the new edition and the original edition of the Lana Del Rey's album cover do have link together this has led us on to remember that the images used in our digipak and advert will also have to have a strong link, to the music video and our ideas. We should not add newly formed ideas that don't have a strong connection to our music video, as they will not look like a realistic album cover, advert and digipak. We already have some ideas of images that will be used in them all which we have previously blogged about, again we will be editing and discussing these ideas as soon as our editing process is complete.

Album Ideas

The two images above are a few of our main ideas for the front of our album cover, as you can see from both ideas the image is the same as is the typeography. We have decided that the text on the ideas will be the one that we use when creating the whole digipak. In the first idea the text is large, which can be seen as a little overpowering from the audience prehaps taking the much needed attention away from the album art. The brightness of the image has also be toned down a little, we wanted to experiment with different contrasts and brightness to see what would look most effective and realistic for our target audience. We then decided to do another idea the second image, which you can see the text is smaller and fits well in the sky, the text does not draw away the attention of the audience but at the same time will make them look at the text to see who the album is created by. We learned about the 'Z' which is something an audience do, firsty looking at the top of the album, then in a diagonal line after going straight to the bottom. We have incopriated this into the second image, making the text still a main focus but less prominant letting the audience focus on the image used (linking to the lovers eyes music video.) The image is also brighter than the first image, it does make the album cover seem more eye catching and the surrounding and features of the shot stand out more. We will be looking at other ideas for our album cover, and developing our thoughts.

Filming

We managed to get our filming done on Monday, we are now in the process of putting together the final bits of footage to our beach shots and practicing with different types of effects we can use of the clips we've just shot to make them look more effective. We have also been trying out lots of different places to out our artist name and album cover on our front cover on the album track. I think having the name of the artist in the sky is the most effective place as the audience will straight away view it, and the move on to looking at the image used. We have not fully decided on the position of the album cover yet, but we will focus on this after we have finished our editing.

We have also been listening a lot to the song when editing to make sure certain clips are in the right place for the pace of the music, however this has been difficult as we have lots of short shots to show the movment of the female alone on the beach, but also in the coloured shots. We wanted to create an up tempo feel to the music video when the song picks up its pace, so we have today moved around some clips to fit with this. We are on track with the editing process, and are happy with the project we have created so far.

Tomorrow I will be uploading a few ideas that as a group we have made on the album front and back cover with text, and will alos be uploading my own. So each individual in the group can also express their own ideas, which we will be able to build and work on to create our finishing product.

Extra Filming

Due to the weather being a bit dull recently we still have not been able to create our scenes with the boy for our music video. We have checked the weather forecast for tomorrow and no snow or rain is due to fall. We are going to take full advantage of this and get the last shots of our filming done with Catherine Kirk and Ryan Hawkins. Hopefully after tomorrow we will be able to get most of putting the editing together finished, and then we will be able to focus on getting the colour of the red balloon perfect against the black and white. #

Below is the call sheet for tomorrow.

Time to Meet
9:20 am.

Location to meet
Sixth Form Common Room

Location
Framwellgate

Description of Location
We are going to be using a long field, so we can highlight the depth of the freedom the couple had whilst being in a relationship. The field is isolated away, and is very basic which is all we wanted for these scenes.

Group
Ellie Snowdon, Sarah Hewitt, Kelly Senior and Catherine Kirk.

Characters
Catherine Kirk, playing the female in the music video and Ryan Hawkins playing the male lover.
Props We dont need any probs for these scenes of footage.

Special instructions
Come prepeared even though the weather is supposed to be a little sunny, bring warm clothes just in case the actors have to stand around for a while. Toilets are nearby.

Front Cover

The image below is an idea for the front cover of our album, we have carried on with the theme that we have shown throughout our project. We have continued to use the beach location as it links back to the natural imagery and with the setting we used in our music video, also having the red balloons in the front cover becomes a really iconic symbol which an audience will be able to link the music video for the song and the album cover together. Even though only one balloon was present in our music video, we thought that we should have the front cover with the female with two balloons to symbolise love of two people and that you are never alone. The image is eyecatching and a really sets a powerful statement, it will completly stand out to the audience and will become an iconic symbol to our artist.

Mumford and Sons

On Tuesday night we saw Mumford and Sons, which is the band we are using in our cover song. Going to see the band let us see how the band of the same genre we are basing our music video on presents themeselves on stage. The arena was set up with a carnival/festival theme, and the lighting anf probs all fited in with the Indie Pop genre, the band used outdoor lights, and the colours of the backdrops were natural. Going to the concert has let us devleop our ideas, and go into a lot more depth of how we want our own singer to be percieved. We have realised from the concert that we are on the right track with our ideas we are developing for our magazine advert and digipak. From the images below you can see that the light was a very important aspect of their stage and set up, this is something that we have been trying to also portray in our music video we have been changing the contrast and brightness of the black and white to give it a different atmosphere.

Ideas

This is one of the first ideas for the back of our album cover, this picture featured is one that we took on the day of shooting our footage but we have edited it to make it look more professional, and to add some touches to the colour. We again want the album cover to be simple but eye catching, the album name and a few of the songs stand out against the image used, to picture does not differ away from the importance of the text, which is something that we have been carefully trying to do. We dont want our images to overpower the text, as the name and artist of the album is what the audience we tend to remember most. This is only our first idea, but I do think once we have adapted it further it will become a very iconic back for our album cover, our front cover will also link in with the image used here.

Any feedback on our first idea, and its presentation would be great.

Artist Name

We have been thinking about artist names in our group over the weekend, and we looked at multiple different fonts and narrowd it down to a few of our favourites and ones that we think would fit into our chosen genre. We decided on the name 'Elliot Guy', we had many names to pick from but this one stood out to us the most, its a unique name and no other artists have a similar name to this. We wanted a name that was catchy and easy to remeber, the name isn't very long which means it won't take up a lot of space on the album cover which is something we took into concideration, we want the name to stand out but not to distract away from the album art.

Elliot Guy

This is our selection of fonts, we have not yet decided which one we will use as our font style, but we are happy with the three different fonts that we managed to narrow it down to. The last font is my favourite, it looks extremly sophisticated and gives it a smart and unique edge to it. Again fitting in with us wanting a font that was simple but iconic, I think this font would be the most eye catching to use, and will be recognisable for future albums and featured articles/adverts.

Digipak/Album Cover

Whilst filming at the beach one of the members of our group 'Sarah Hewitt' decided that it would be a good idea to take a few pictures of our surroundings as we may have been able to use them in our album cover and digipak. Once looking through the images, we decided that they would be fantastic for us to use as it follows the theme we have portrayed throuhout our music video. We have not yet decided which images will be used in which promotional packs, but we have put together some edits of the images used and will be thinking more in depth with how we will be able to use them to our best advantage.

As you can see from the images above, the first one is the original copy of the photos taken, and the second is the one we have edited and will be using in either our digipak or advert. The image has been croped, and the brightness of the photo has been increased to make it a more stricking and beautiful image.

This image is one of the most important images taken throughout the day, this image is the one that helped us figure out what we wanted our album to be called. It is very lucky that we came across this image as we now how a perfect picture to go along with the name of our album. This image will probably be one of the main focuses in the digipak.

This image is one that I took when on a location scout to the beach, when looking through the photos from that day we thought that this picture would be able to be used in the album cover as it links back to the music video being on the beach and also follows the theme of nature. The sunset looks beautiful and we would really be able to work with this image, in either photoshop or on a tablet to make the image more stricking. We really want to focus on the light in the clouds it makes it seem as if you are walking to some sort of happiness and glory. We will be developing our images and points further once our editing it completed.

Font/Album Name

When we were shooting our footage at the beach we came across a very large picture on a building with the words 'The Root Of Memories', straight away we thought that this would be a fantastic image that we would be able to edit and use in out digipak. As a group we decided that the slogan on the picture we found would also fit in nicely to be our album name, as the words also fit in with the theme of the music video we are creating.

As a group we have come up with some different fonts so far, and when we come to produce our album cover and digipak we will pick the best font then.

The Root of

Memories
This typeography is extremly bold and stands out due to the different sizes and positioning of the words, it is very simple which is something that we want to portray throughout our products we don't want it to be too complicated as it will stray away from our naturalistic theme.
The Root of   Memories
This is again very simple, and gives off a sense of old fashioned qualities. Due to the typeography being bland it will stand out againt our album cover, digipak and advert as it will differ from what we will be showing through them all. Even though the text is simple it will stand out to the audience, as it seems as if it is the type of text you would come across daily.

The Root of Memories
This font is the most different from all our choices, we wanted to be able to also see what else could work within our choosen theme. This text could be eye catching for an audience, but does not fully fit in with what we wanted our font to look like. Our singer is a male, and the typeography seems to feminine to have for an album cover. If we have our font strong, and powerful it will give off the message that the album is about certain things that he is passionate about, and wants to let his audience follow them.

Balloon

Again we have encountered some problems whilst editing our clips, when we are trying to use the 'Leave Colour' effect the red balloon is staying red but other parts of the clips such as the scenery and Catherines face are also turning red. This is because on certain clips the sun has been shining and reflected onto Catherine, the effect is picking up on this and thinking that we want to also keep this red. We are in the process of trying to figure out a new way that we will be able to keep our original idea for the clips we are having difficulty with.

Pictures

Below are a few pictures from when we shot our footage for our music video. There are pictures from the scenery, and our actress Catherine Kirk and also a group photo of us all after all our footage was shot.

Balloon

Whilst filming at the beach we did encounter some wind which has effected out shots. We were hoping to use 'Matte' to keep the colour of the red balloon, but due to the wind this is not possible. We knew that if it was windy we would have to change the effect that we were planning on using, as we faced the problem with the wind when we tried 'Matte' on a poppy in one of our planning tasks. During this week we have been playing around with our footage, we have been thinking about how we were going to create the shots in black and white but keep the red colour of the balloon. We had some difficulty at first with keeping the colour of the balloon in the shots and we thought that we were going to have to abandon our unique idea. When playing around we came across the effect called 'Leave Colour', after playing around with the effect for a while we found a way that we would be able to keep our shots in black and white and be able to keep the colour of the balloon. When using this effect on certain clips, there is a shine of red missing from the balloon, as when we have used the effect it has picked up on the sun shining on the balloon and will not notice that it is red. This isn't very noticable and we will be able to work around the problem, however when creating this effect for other balloon shots if we face the problem again, we will have to change the effect we are using so we can create the image perfectly.

Below is an image of how we have been using the 'Leave Colour' effect.

Overview

Over the past few months we have gone into a lot of depth into the certain type of Indie Pop music video we want to create, we know what type of camera shots and angles are used in the videos which we will/have put into our own music video. We designed our storyboard way in advance so we could have plenty of time to practice each shots so we could shot them perfectly on the actual footage day. We have all kept up to date with out planning, equally giving out tasks to everyone in the group, in our last task 'opening scene' we did all the work together which took up a lot of time, so we decided in the 'music video task' to allocate certain aspects of research to each person in the group and them to discuss it as a whole so we all understand and know the focus.

I personally have been a lot more detailed on my blog since the last task, I have realised that anything that happens during planning, filimg or just discussions should be blogged about so everyone can get an insight to new ideas or changes.

We have already shot the beach section of our music video, which is the main part. Even thought we had to change the days of filming, it all ran very smoothly and we had no major implications. As we have filmed all our footage outside the quality of the clips is already much better than our AS task (where we filmed inside), the video camera work best outside. As a group we really enjoyed our filming day, and are now in the process of editing our beach clips. We will soon be filming our scenes in the woods/fields with the male character. After all the footage is done, we will finish off the editing process, and then begin with the other products needing to be created. We are on track at the moment, and the amount of planning that we have designed and done into the music video has really helped us with this.

Filming

We were able to get all our beach footage shot on Sunday, the weather was as expected but just a tad windy. We worked against the wind to get all the shots that we needed and once looking over at the footage we shot, we think we did the best we could have done and used our time wisely. We followed the storyboard, so we managed to get all the shots we had already created for our music video, but we also caught some footage on the day that we will proably also be using in our music video. We took the balloons with us on the bus t South Shields, I asked the balloon lady to put an extra type of chemical in the balloons to make them last longer and not deflate on our travels, they stayed up all day and we were able to use the prop just they way we wished to. We decided last week that we were going to take two video camera filming with us, I decided to look at the camera the night before to make sure they were fully charged the second video camera was flat, I charged the camera all the way through the night and once filming began the camera unfortunaltey died, luckily we were prepared with a second camera and this default did not interupt our filming at all.

Sarah Hewitt also brought her own normal camera in from home, where we took some 'behind the scenes' footage and some pictures of the day filming so we could capture how the day turned out. These pictures will be uploaded on the blogs shortly. We took plently of extra footage, so we could have a wide variety to choose from when the editing process begins.

We will be filming the next part of our music video in the upcoming week.

Balloon

Today I picked up the balloon for us filming our music video on Sunday. I decided that the best idea was to not just to get one red balloon, but two just incase we have any dilemas with it popping or deflating. We have put a balloon weight on the end of the balloons so they don't float away as we got them as hellium balloons. We are all getting ready for filming tomorrow recharging the video cameras, and packing our bags with any supplies that we will need.

Below is a picture of the red balloons we will be using in our music video.

Filming

Unfortunatley we have had another delay in our filming, we were supposed to filming today at 3:20. But our actor Ryan Hawkins has sadly been diagnosed with a lung infection, we did not want to make Ryan any worse than his condition is already as we would be out in the cold for at least an hour. This however won't really delay our filming and editing process as we will be able to catch the shots we want of Ryan anytime after we have completed our beach filming day, which is the main focus of our music video. We will wait for Ryan to get better, and produce a new call sheet when we know the new date we will be filming the wood shots.

South Shields

A few months ago we all had a trip to South Shields on a Sunday, we got the bus there which was easy enough but what we didn't realise is that the buses on the way back don't go back to our home destination after a certain time. So I have looked at the bus times for a Sunday to make sure that we don't have the same problems coming home as we encountered on our previous trip. We all now have a full understanding of the times of the buses which will take us back to Durham.

Weather Check

I will keep checking the weather forecast for Sunday 11th of November so we do not encounter any complications when we go to film again at South Shields. I am very pleased to say the weather is still looking sunny and we are going to use this advantage to it's full potential. We understand that even though it's going to be sunnier than it has been in Durham recentley it will still be very cold as we are near the coast. We will all be taking winter essentials just in case so we are all fully prepared.

Contingency

Due to our first footage day having to be cancelled and moved to this weekend we decided that the best idea was to come up with a back up plan in case we encounter any more problems due to weather or other circumstances. If our whole concept of filming on the beach at South Shields fails we have dedcided that we will just have to film our music video around the fields and woods at Newton Hall, even though this won't fully grasp the idea we wanted to produce for our music video we will be able to produce a similiar feel to the music video which we want to create. There are many features around the woods where we will be able to capture the same shots we have designed for the beach. There are many bridges and secluded areas where we will be able to create the feel of isolation and the female character reminising. If we end up having to use this location which is the same as our second location then we will have to remember to create a significant difference between all shots in the footage days. We will have to be more adventerous to be able to create a different feel to the location so we can create our concept for our music video.  However I don't really feel that we will need to use this back up plan, as our group will try are hardest to make the beach setting work for our music video. Hopefully the sunny weather forecast for Sunday will keep up so we can produce our original idea for our Indie Pop muisc video.

Filming

We in gathered in lesson to talk about our new filming day, we checked the weather forecast for Saturday 10th of November and theres supposed to be know rain. However when checking the weather forecast for South Sheilds we found that Sunday 11th of November had a better weather forecast of bright sunshine. We have now decided to go and film our music video on this date so we can conduct the best possible music video we can, and use the sunny weather to our advantage.

Below is a screen shot for the weather on Sunday 11th of November.

Saturday, 3 November 2012

Filming Delay

As you can see from our call sheet for Saturday 3rd of November, we were supposed to be shooting the beach footage for our music video today. We have been checking the weather forecast regulary and we were under the impression that it would not rain. The weather in Durham was perfect, but once we gathered to meet to begin filming it started to unfortunatley rain. We decided that we should prospone the shooting of the footage, as our music video wouldn't have turned out the way we wanted it to, plus we would have had the risk of the rain interfering with the electric video cameras and making health and safety a huge problem when filming on the sand dunes. We have decided that we will now film our music video at the beach next Saturday 10th of November, I will produce another call sheet so our actors can get all the information they need for the new change in filming.

Weather

Catherine Kirk was supposed to be shooting some pictures for our second location during the end of last week. Unfortunatley we have had some weather problems, we have recieved some snow and rain which would not show the loaction to it's full potential. It would be far to dangerous to send Catherine down to the woods in these conditions, as it would be slipperly and dismal. The photos would have came out melancholy and would have not shown the real fun, happy feel we wish to have when using this location.

We have used the location before for our short music video we created at the start of the school year, I have previously blogged about the video which can be seen in the link below if you wish to see the second location we will be using for a few shots of footage in the music video.

http://ellielouisea2.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/short-music-video.html

Obviously if the weather conditions keep up this way it may cause some problems when we film on Wednesday 3rd of November at the beach. We are however going to have to keep checking the weather forecast and hope that there will be a sudden change so we can safely film our footage. As we are shooting the footage at the beach in black and white it won't really effect the quality of the music video if it isn't a bright day. However if there is some rain on the day, we may have to reschedule our filming day so we can produce a realistic muisc video.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard we created for our Indie Pop music video.

Location

We are using two different types of loaction in our Indie Pop music video. I have previously blogged about our first location (the beach). Our second location is closer to where we all live so it is easily accessable. This location is Newton Hall fields and woods, we will be filming the parts where the male and female character are shown to be in a relationship at this location, they will be in more casual clothes compared to the female clothing in the first location. They two people acting will be seen to be very playful and having a lovely time together. Even though we aren't showing the full faces of the two characters in these clips, the location will still play a big part as it links into the theme of nature. When we use such shots as extreme close ups, we will still be able to have some scenery of the location. We are hoping to have a shot of the two lying down together with flowers and plants surrounding them which we add extra emphasis on how the idea couple would be with one another, and also highlighting the theme of nature running throughout our music video. We have already used this location once before when we conducted our preliminary task, which can be seen in my previous blog posts. As a group we know what to expect from the location and the best places we should use to catch great shots for our music video. Catherine Kirk will later this week go to the location and take some pictures.

Location

On Monday evening I went to South Sheilds to do a location scout of the area. I have found many picturesque places on the beach that links in with the ideas we came up with whilst planning. The only problem we face is that there is not a bench near the beach, so we won't be able to get the scenery in if we found a beach near by. The scenery plays a big part in the music video, so wanting to create the iconic bench shot without the scenery would be pointless, it would not be authentic or realistic. So I decided to look for something along the lines of the bench shot, and would report back my idea to the rest of the group. I found a sand dune right on the beach which is perfect, the dune is not very high so can be reached within safety, we can use the sand dune to replace the idea of the bench, but still have the female in the video sitting on the sand dune dangling her legs. Due to the sand dune being up a little height we will be able to get some great shots looking up at her sitting on the dune, but also right next to her.

The pictures below are some of the images I thought would be fantastic to use when shooting our music video. There are shots of the beach, sea, and near by scenery. Some of the pictures are places I found around the location of the beach, which will help us create  unique and peaceful shots of the female character. The beach has some amazing features that will feature in our scenery shots and pans.

Rough Idea

This short video is our very rough idea on things we wish to include in our own music video. We put this video together by using the clips we used for our practice shots, and put the song (not our actual cover) over the top. We have used black and white to create a strong contrast against the colour clips, it blatently shows the difference in the two different situations we are trying to show in the video. When the colour changes, the atmosphere and the mood also does as well, which helps us highlight to the audience the reflection of the past. The shots used are very basic but we just wanted to portray a few of our first ideas, the close ups on the females face lets the audince focus on the feelings of the character, she is shown to be unhappy but looks as though she is also concentrating and pondering on thoughts. The mixture of angles we have used helps us convey the clear effect we want to come across to the audience, it fixates on her expressions and emotions, the females face is dark, dismal and seems stern.

Everything that is shown in this short video will be taken into our real production of our Indie Pop music video. We will adapt and expand these ideas, to make them more complex and adventerous. The different transitions between the black and white then colour shots are really eye catching, each shot stands out as it is never a contionous shot they are always switching keeping the audience intrigued and on their toes with the story the video is telling. The different coloured shots are really interesting as they are shot with the same female character but she is shown to look, and feel completey different. In  the black and white ones, the female looks melancholy and typically 'down in the dumps'. Whislt when in the colour shots she is shown to be energeticm, and full of energy, connoting the power that 'young love' has over you, which some of the audience may be able to relate with. Whilst in the black and white images do seem sinister, we don't actually always want to show her in this way throughout the whole black and white shots even though she is unhappy with the way her relationship has turned out she is trying to think positvely and thinking ahead, which signifys the balloon when we shot the footage for the real production. We really have to empahsis this, as if not the whole music video will just seem as if we are focusing on the down fall of love.

In the rough idea we decided to use jump cuts to hightlight the difference in the shots, representing the change in the setting and story, we wont use jump cuts for evry transistion as I don't seem to think they are really nessessary it takes away the realistic feel away from the music video. When we come to the real editing process I think we should prehaps use a jump cut for a certain change we want to add extra emphasis too, but not soley rely on them each time the shots change. A cross desolve was used when we added the couples smiles, the overlapping of the male and females smile represents the connection they couple once had and how close they were, the fading of the smiles would go on to portray the distance between the pair and how their love has faded.

Additionally I think that creating a rough idea this early on in the planning process was an brilliant idea to do. We have been able to discuss what in the group what each of us think works and looks good or shots and angles that don't seem to be as effective. In completing this task we now have an insight to what our music video will look like and how we will cope with the task and also how to make the most of our abilities and facilities.
